Captions

Support

Email captions@jonyen.com and you'll reach the person who wrote the app. Please say which watch and iPhone you have and what you were doing at the time — it makes a real difference.

Getting started

  1. Install Captions on your iPhone. The watch app installs alongside it.
  2. Open the app on your iPhone once and allow the microphone when asked.
  3. On your watch, open Captions and tap Start.

Common problems

Captions are slow or less accurate than usual

Your iPhone does the more accurate transcription when it is nearby and connected. If it's out of Bluetooth range, in another room, or switched off, the watch falls back to its own on-device model, which is smaller and less accurate. Bringing your phone closer restores the better transcription on the next session.

Nothing appears on the watch

Check that the microphone permission was granted — on your watch, look in Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone. If the app was denied access, captions cannot be produced.

A saved conversation is missing from my iPhone

A conversation captured while your phone wasn't nearby is delivered the next time the two devices are connected. Open the app on your watch with your phone nearby and give it a moment.

My watch only shows recent conversations

That's deliberate — the watch keeps a rolling set of recent sessions to save space. Your iPhone holds the complete history.

There's no summary on a conversation

Summaries are generated on your iPhone using Apple's on-device intelligence. If your iPhone doesn't support it, or it's turned off, the transcript is still saved in full — only the summary is skipped.

Accessibility

Captions is built for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and it should work well with VoiceOver and with larger text sizes. If something is awkward to use with assistive technology, please tell me — those reports get priority over feature requests.

Privacy

Nothing you say leaves your watch and your phone. The details are in the privacy policy.
